There was an idea. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people, see if they could become something more. See if they could work together when we needed them to to fight the battles we never could.
In honor of the rumors that a new Avengers trailer may be dropping this week, I thought I would do a deep dive into something that I know *I* think about at least once a week. If hockey players were super heroes, which one would they be?
Auston Matthews as Captain America
Alright, this one is first cause its kinda the most obvious. The face of American hockey is going to be Captain America. The Arizonan born Center will be the Captain of Team America, and soon. But until then he fights the good fight above the border, probably a frozen ‘Capsicle’ every time he goes out.
William Nylander as the Winter Soldier
If Auston is Captain America, then Willy is obviously his sidekick, the Winter Soldier. You can love or hate Willy and the Winter Soldier, and he has been known to disappear to foreign lands from time to time where no one hears from him….. lets hope he remembers Auston when he gets back.
Hilary Knight as the Black Widow
Badass? Could kill you easily? A deadly shot and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win? Hilary Knight is an obvious Black Widow. There are very few hockey players on the planet (male or female) more fearsome and badass than her.
Patrik Laine as Hawkeye
When you score 5 goals in a game, I think its safe to say you have a deadly shot. Its only fair to compare the sharpest shooter in the league to the Avenger’s sniper. Often overlooked, underrated and preferring to spend time alone, both Laine and Hawkeye can change the game with one flick of the wrist.
Henrik Lundqvist as Iron Man
Shooter: Big man in a suit of armor. Take that off, what are you?
Henrik: Genius billionaire playboy philanthropist.
The handsome, Swedish goalie fits into the Iron Man role perfectly. A hero, celebrated and never one to shy away from the spot light reaching the end of his tenure, but refusing to go out without a bang. Both Tony Stark and Henrik Lundqvist will long be missed after they are gone.
Tom Wilson as The Incredible Hulk
He’s a good guy. He swears. Its just sometimes he gets angry. And you won’t like him when he’s angry. Look, i am a noted Tom Wilson hater, so maybe this is biased, but the split personalities and vindictive nature of THE HULK versus Bruce Banner seems very Wilson-esque to me.
Jack Hughes as Spiderman
a small Jewish boy, ready to rescue a franchise (hockey or movie), Jack Hughes is definitely Spiderman. So much potential and energy, and a small American boy is always going to do his best to become a walking meme (see Auston Matthews). Jack Hughes is ready to stand on his own in the NHL lime light, and be iconic (TM) while doing so.
PK Subban as Black Panther
i mean… duh. PK Subban is a king, a hero, an absolute icon. He is trying to make life better for people using the power and influence hockey has given him and he is the only one worthy of this title.
Erik Karlsson as Thor
a Norse god with amazing hair and a weapon than only those with the purest heart can use. Erik Karlsson’s shot should just be called Mjölnir at this point. Also, he’s basically played on two different planets. One, a disastrous hell hole run by a tyranical elf, and the other is San Jose. Hopefully Erik Karlsson fairs a lot better on this world.
Marie Philip Poulin as Captain Marvel
When all of the heroes fall, there is only one person you can turn to. A legend amongst legends. Marie Philip Poulin. 2 time Olympic Gold Medalist, Poulin is the hero that we have all been waiting for, and watching her break barriers has been amazing throughout her career. Her talent, is like she is from another universe.
